Vistasp Ardeshir Balsara was born into a Parsi family in Bombay in 1922 and worked in Hindi film music before Gyan Prakash Ghosh invited him to Calcutta in 1953. He settled there the next year and stayed for the rest of his life, studying Indian classical music and taking up Bengali song.
He was the arranger's arranger — keyboards above all, but also harmonium, organ, accordion, melodica — with music for some thirty Bengali and a dozen Hindi films and over two hundred albums, many of them instrumental Rabindrasangeet.
His place in this archive comes from the notation side of that work: songs whose melodies had never been precisely written down, he wrote down.
