What is swaralipi?
Swaralipi (স্বরলিপি) is Indian musical notation: the swaras, the taal and the matra written out as text. Jyotirindranath Tagore devised the akarmatrik (আকারমাত্রিক) system in 1885 to write down his brother's songs, and it is still the notation Rabindrasangeet is taught and published in, from the Swarabitan volumes onwards.
Reading it takes a minute. The matra grid runs above the words rather than beside them, so the line of svaras and the line of lyric are read together, downwards. The language picker rewrites the same grid in English or Hindi letters with the timing untouched, and the Staff setting engraves it as a Western stave for anyone who reads that instead.
