Sahana Debi was born in 1897 into the Das household of Calcutta — Chittaranjan Das was her uncle, Atulprasad Sen her cousin — and learnt music first from her aunt Amala Das. She was among the small number of singers who learnt the songs directly from Rabindranath and from Dinendranath Tagore, and one of only two whom the poet allowed to ornament his melodies as they sang.
In 1928 she left all of it for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry, where she remained until her death in 1990.
Her memoir Smritir Kheya is the first-hand record of both halves of that life.
